Presidential enthusiasm for motorsports runs strong. The standout moment came in 1984 when Ronald Reagan became the first sitting president to attend a NASCAR race. Flying aboard Air Force One, he delivered the legendary command—“Gentlemen, start your engines!”—for the Firecracker 400 at Daytona International Speedway.During the DC Grand Prix in August 2026, IndyCar machines scream through a temporary 1.7 mile, seven-turn street circuit on the National Mall, weaving among the monuments and around the enduring icons of the republic. Framed by the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the U.S. Capitol, this event celebrates America’s 250th birthday with world-class open-wheel racing. The White House Historical Association embraces this occasion in partnership with the legendary AJ Foyt Racing Team and driver Santino Ferrucci during race week. Together they represent the blend of deep tradition, engineering brilliance, and bold daring that has long connected the presidency with the world of speed.
